What is the Annotation Assistant
Annotation assistant is a tool that helps detect common annotation mistakes and ensures the best annotation practices. Following its recommendations will help you reach Rossum’s full potential and its learning capabilities. When it is enabled, Rossum displays a suggestion message next to the field in question to help you follow the best practices.
Please keep in mind that these tips are recommendations. We strongly advise you to follow them but feel free to disregard them in certain situations.

How do you enable Annotation Assistant
You cannot activate it yourself within the app. Please get in touch with our support team or your Rossum contact if you want to enable the Annotation Assistant on your queues. They will do it for you.
Note: You can also request it for additional queues at no extra cost. Contact your account success representative to activate it.
What best practices the Annotation Assistant helps with
Overlapping Fields
Fields should not overlap or point to the same location, so look for the same value in another section of the document. Always opt for the first occurrence of the value on the documents.
Messages you can see:
Field overlaps another field ‘{ }’ too much. Please reduce its size.
Field points to the same box as ‘{ }’.
Cell overlaps another cell ‘{ }’. Cells cannot overlap.
Size of the box
If the box is too large, you probably select text from the logo. Please note that Rossum cannot reliably read data from logos. Choose the exact text from another section of the document.
Messages you can see:
This box is higher than on average invoice.
This box is wider than on average invoice.
The field is suspiciously tall. Did you tag a logo?
Missing box
Rossum’s AI needs to know where the information on the document is located. Draw correct bounding boxes around each field. Please keep in mind that it does not apply to select (dropdown) fields like document type, language, or currency.
Messages you can see:
Header field has a value but no box. Please set a box for the field.
Cell has a value but no box. Please set a box for the cell.
Suspicious text value
Rossum’s interface validates the formatting of the various field values based on predefined rules. The Annotation assistant adds one extra validation for suspicious text values.
Message you can see:
Value contains the scrambled text. – It is usually a sign that Rossum’s engine cannot read the annotated box correctly.
Tables
Tables are a variable element of the documents, so correctly annotating them is important. To learn more about tables, please check our article about best practices for annotating tables.
Annotation assistant helps in situations where tables are skipped or information from the tables is annotated outside their borders.
Messages you can see:
Please check the table values. – The message will disappear after you click at least one of the extracted table cells in the footer.
Cells of the table should be inside the table. – Appears if the cell’s annotation is outside the magic grid.
Header field should not be inside a table. – Appears when the header field is inside a magic grid.
